AGUIRRE - Werner Herzog on Popol Vuh and Florian Fricke (1998):Discovering Popol Vuh was a stroke of luck for me, because Florian Fricke and Popol Vuh’s music has always managed to reveal something hidden in the images deep within the darkness of our souls.Through this music, the scenes from my best films always gained a newer, unique and beautiful quality. A quality that would not have been reflected through the pictures alone, were it not for Florian Fricke’s - and thus. Popol Vuh’s - music. This music carries something cryptic and mysterious inside itself. Popol Vuh’s music can emphasise qualities, attributes and rhythms, especially in cinema, that would not otherwise translate.
This is probably why Popol Vuh’s music for my films has been nominated for 3 Oscars. And then can you tell us something about the artwork?FF - In creativity there are not always reasons. Some of the things are just flying straight through the window. But at that time I was especially interesting in using first the words, and then making music to the words, in other.words there were existing lyrics that I wanted to add music to. I wanted to convey the depth of meaning contained in a word, and then transform this into musical sounds, a from of musical expression.
That is one way of composing music for me. I don't always do it, but on and off I keep having an interest in composing in such way.
